The British Association of Hokkaido Ken or BAHK was founded in January 2024 by two breed enthusiasts, Lindsey and Liv, to aid with the ownership, preservation and education of the Hokkaido Ken in the United Kingdom. The Hokkaido Ken is recognised across the world including with the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), American Kennel Club (AKC-FSS) , United Kennel Club (UKC), Hokkaido Ken Hozonkai , and The Nihon Ken Hozonkai in Japan (NIPPO). The Hokkaido Ken is currently not recognised by The Kennel Club here in the UK due to low numbers. At the time of launch of the club, the UK currently has 13 Hokkaido Ken residing within the UK.

The club’s objective is to educate, promote and conserve this ancient breed. The breed is currently under threat of extinction, across the globe and in their native Japan. The club actively supports members, the public and Hokkaido enthusiasts alike, as well as supports research into health, aids with rescue and re-homing and keeps members and non-members informed on ownership of this primitive breed.
